CBP officers at the Juárez–Lincoln International Bridge in Laredo say a routine outbound check of a flashy 2021 Chevrolet Corvette turned into a major gun bust, after they uncovered 44 handguns and 79 magazines hidden inside the car on Feb. 3. Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested the driver, and CBP seized both the weapons and the vehicle. The seizure, disclosed this week, is the latest high-volume interception at the busy Laredo port of entry, as reported by CW39.
According to CW39, officers pulled the Corvette for a secondary inspection during outbound operations, then sent it through a non-intrusive inspection system scan and a canine exam before conducting a hands-on search that exposed the stash. The outlet reports that agents ultimately recovered 44 pistols and 79 magazines concealed in hidden compartments and turned the case over to HSI for further investigation.
"Significant outbound weapons seizures, like the one realized by our officers at Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, reflect the relentless dedication of our officers to upholding CBP's border security mission and keeping our border communities safe," Port Director Alberto Flores said, according to FOX4. FOX4 also reports that HSI special agents arrested the driver and that a criminal investigation is ongoing; officials did not immediately release the driver's name or details on potential charges.
How Officers Say They Cracked the Case
CBP described the bust as the product of standard outbound enforcement work rather than a one-off lucky break. The Corvette first went through a non-intrusive inspection system, then a trained canine alerted, which prompted officers to go in for a more intensive manual search. That is when they found the hidden compartments stuffed with weapons and magazines, local reporting indicates.
Spanish-language coverage from El Mañana notes that the seizure unfolded in the outbound lanes of the Juárez–Lincoln crossing on Feb. 3 and that officers seized the weapons, magazines and the Corvette itself. Those items were later turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for criminal follow-up.
Border Crackdowns in Laredo
The Corvette bust is not happening in a vacuum. Laredo has seen several large outbound interdictions in recent years. In October 2025, officers uncovered more than 300 firearms hidden in two box trailers at the same bridge, as reported by the Laredo Morning Times. Authorities say the mix of scanning technology, canine teams and targeted outbound inspections is meant to keep U.S.-sourced guns from flowing south to organized-crime groups in Mexico.
Legal Implications
Attempting to export firearms without proper federal authorization can violate U.S. export controls and bring serious criminal penalties. Licensing and exception rules are governed in part by the Export Administration Regulations overseen by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security. Homeland Security Investigations typically takes the lead on criminal probes into attempted smuggling and works with federal prosecutors to determine what charges, if any, will be filed.
