A San Antonio police motorcycle officer working a funeral escort was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash on the city's north side near Highway 281 and Loop 1604. The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. while the off-duty officer was guiding a funeral procession through the area, according to officials.
The San Antonio Fire Department said the officer was transported Priority 1 to a hospital, a designation indicating potentially serious injuries, as reported by KENS 5. Officials had not released additional details about what led to the crash or the officer's current condition as of Tuesday evening, and the station described the story as still developing. Separately, KSAT confirmed the collision involved two vehicles and that the officer was actively escorting the funeral procession when the crash occurred.
The officer was working the funeral escort as off-duty secondary employment, a common arrangement in which San Antonio police officers are contracted directly by funeral homes or private escort agencies to guide processions through traffic, according to a report from Police1.
A Familiar Hazard on Bexar County Roads
Tuesday's crash is not an isolated case. In May 2023, an off-duty San Antonio police officer guiding a funeral procession on Somerset Road on the city's South Side was hospitalized after a pickup truck failed to yield, throwing him from his motorcycle and dragging him underneath, KSAT reported at the time. In July 2024, an off-duty Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy on a motorcycle was struck by a vehicle while escorting a funeral procession on Harry Wurzbach Road, according to a report cited by AllSides.
Those earlier incidents point to a recurring safety hazard for motorcycle officers working funeral escorts across Bexar County. The stretch of roadway where Tuesday's crash occurred also carries its own dangerous history: a San Antonio Express-News analysis of Texas Department of Transportation crash data from 2017 to 2022 found that Loop 1604 recorded 36 fatal crashes resulting in 74 deaths, while Highway 281 logged 31 fatal crashes over the same period.
What Texas Law Requires of Drivers Near Escorts
Texas law lays out specific rules governing how funeral escorts and drivers are supposed to interact at intersections. Under Texas Transportation Code § 545.156, drivers are required to yield the right-of-way and move to the right edge of the roadway when approached by an authorized emergency vehicle using active audible and visual signals. Separately, Texas Transportation Code § 546.104, enacted through House Bill 1732 in 2019, allows operators facilitating traffic for a funeral escort service who have completed state-approved training to proceed past red lights or stop signs after slowing down safely.
Texas Penal Code § 42.05 also makes it a Class B misdemeanor to intentionally obstruct or disrupt a lawful funeral procession or gathering. Together, the statutes create a framework in which trained escorts are authorized to guide processions through traffic signals while motorists are generally expected to yield — a dynamic that can create confusion at busy intersections like the one where Tuesday's crash occurred.
Motorcycle Safety a Statewide Concern
The crash also lands amid broader concerns about motorcycle safety on Texas roads. Preliminary 2025 data from the Texas Department of Transportation reported 557 motorcyclists killed and 2,468 seriously injured statewide, with motorcycle fatalities accounting for roughly 15 percent of all traffic deaths in Texas. More than a third of those fatalities occur at roadway intersections, according to the same agency, which has pushed public awareness efforts like its Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles campaign.
It remains unknown whether a driver's failure to yield played any role in Tuesday's crash, and officials have not released the officer's identity or updated his medical status. It is also unclear whether San Antonio police or city officials plan to review safety protocols for off-duty funeral escort assignments in light of the crash and the pattern of similar incidents in recent years.
