Crews at the Buda Sportsplex have officially moved past the quiet, stakes-in-the-ground phase and into the kind of construction you can actually see. Field framing and dugout foundations are up, the maintenance facility shell is climbing into view along the edge of the site, and contractors have already installed major utilities after work began in September 2025. It is the first big burst of on-site progress since the city signed off on an overhaul meant to bring tournament-level amenities to the 52-acre park.
What’s Been Built So Far
According to Community Impact, crews have finished installing water and wastewater lines, a storm drain, fence posts, and the batting-cages building, and they have completed framing and dugout foundations on the new fields. The renovation calls for four new softball diamonds plus upgrades to four existing fields, and it includes a sand-based drainage system, the city says will allow play to resume in about an hour after rainfall. The City of Buda's project page also lists plans for roughly 800 additional parking spaces. Community Impact reports that the current phase is on track for completion by mid-September 2026.
Tony Host, Buda's parks and recreation director, told Community Impact, "I know we're not turf, but we can drain in an hour, and we can get back to playing." Host added that the renovation will give the city full facility control for the first time so staff can lock the grounds and cut down on vandalism and trespassing.
Funding and Timeline
City council materials show the city solicited bids and negotiated a construction contract after an initial award could not be executed, and public records put the construction figure just under $15 million. The city's agenda packet documents funding that includes a 2024 certificates-of-obligation allocation and a $1.5 million contribution from the Buda Economic Development Corporation, with the remainder expected to be covered by a planned 2026 CO bond, per council documents. Project listings and contractor notices also spell out the scope of work, including grading, underdrain systems, lighting, concessions, and parking tied to the award.
Why It Matters For Buda
City leaders have pitched the upgrade as a way to attract tournaments and weekend visitors who spend at local hotels, restaurants, and shops, turning the Sportsplex into an economic engine for the fast-growing community. Hoodline's earlier reporting on the approved plan, which described the project as a sports tourism play for the city, noted that officials are targeting sports tourism as a revenue driver and projected sizable visitor counts on busy weekends. If the phased schedule holds, parts of the complex could host events while finishing touches continue, giving Buda an earlier return on its investment.
What’s Left And When
Contractor listings and project notices indicate the remaining work includes irrigation and landscaping, final field completion and sod, construction of concessions and batting cages, bathroom upgrades, equipment installs, and paving of the expanded parking area. The city lists the Sportsplex as a reservable facility and maintains park hours and rental information on its Parks & Recreation pages. Officials say the completed fields' quick-drain system should let tournament directors plan around shorter rain delays, a feature staff expect will help attract more events once the whole complex is up and running.
