Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is slated to blast back into action at Magic Kingdom on April 8, sporting a serious tech refresh. The core shooting-game setup sticks around, but the attraction now features completely updated ride vehicles, handheld blasters, reactive targets, and a Star Command support bot named Buddy. Behind the scenes, the makeover modernizes lighting, sound, and haptic feedback, and folds in on-ride scoring and Disney PhotoPass integration. Veterans of the original run can expect the same basic mission, now running on far more sophisticated hardware.
Disney's official details
According to the Disney Parks Blog, Disney is billing the updated attraction as a "recharged" version of the classic. Guests will meet Buddy in the preshow area for a round of target practice before they ever board a vehicle. The company also confirmed that on-ride photos will now display each rider’s score and rank, tying the new in-vehicle scoring displays directly into Disney PhotoPass.
What's changed in the game
Hands-on previews and Imagineering notes indicate that the blasters are now designed to be picked up, with built-in haptic feedback plus lighting and sound cues that respond when a target is hit. The scoring system has also been expanded so players can finally push past the old 999,999-point ceiling, ClickOrlando reports. The attraction first opened in 1998, and Imagineers say the goal this time was to keep the core challenge intact while updating the effects and hardware to current standards, per Wikipedia.
What reporters saw in previews
Media invited for early looks described entirely new ride vehicles and a refreshed queue. One report noted that the cars now feature battery packs mounted on the back and blasters that are tethered to the dashboard instead of being permanently fixed in place, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Another hands-on account highlighted the upgraded LEDs, sound, and haptics in the blasters, plus the new reactive targets and on-vehicle score displays that update in real time, as TechRadar observed.
When to plan your trip
The April 8 reopening hits just ahead of Disney's Cool KIDS’ SUMMER season and the broader 2026 lineup, and Disney is already warning that the first few weeks are likely to be busy, according to the Disney Parks Blog. Fan sites and local outlets expect limited previews and tightly controlled soft openings for Cast Members, Annual Passholders, and Disney Vacation Club members in the days leading up to the public launch, so anyone hoping to tackle the updated mission early will want to keep a close eye on official channels for preview announcements.
