Cancer patients in eastern Wisconsin now have an in-state option for one of the most precise forms of radiation care. On March 27, 2026, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin opened the state’s first proton therapy center at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. The single-room clinic brings high-precision radiation to both adults and children, giving families a local alternative to out-of-state proton treatment. Hospital leaders say the new program is expected to cut travel burdens for patients and open doors to more clinical trials close to home.
The clinic sits on the Froedtert Hospital campus and will treat both adult and pediatric patients, according to Froedtert & MCW. It uses a compact MEVION S250i proton system that the manufacturer says can fit inside a single treatment room and lower installation barriers for hospitals, per Mevion Medical Systems. The debut of the center was first reported by the Milwaukee Business Journal.
How Proton Therapy Works And Who It Helps
Proton therapy uses charged particles that deposit most of their energy at a specific depth inside the body, which can limit how much radiation nearby organs and tissues receive, according to the National Cancer Institute. That precision is a major reason clinicians often look to proton therapy for pediatric solid tumors and cancers located next to critical structures such as the brain, spinal cord, and heart.
Local Impact And What Comes Next
Until now, many Wisconsin patients needing proton treatment had to cross state lines for care, a routine that families say can be both physically exhausting and financially draining. Local coverage has highlighted that reality, and TMJ4 has profiled patients who previously traveled to centers such as Mayo Clinic for proton therapy. The arrival of compact proton systems lines up with a separate UW Health proton program at Eastpark Medical Center, which is scheduled to begin proton treatments in early 2026 and is expected to expand statewide access for Wisconsin patients, per UW-Madison reporting.
Manufacturers say single-room platforms like the MEVION S250i can lower construction and equipment hurdles for hospitals and help make proton therapy more accessible, according to Mevion Medical Systems. “Today marks a milestone in the Froedtert & MCW Cancer Network’s evolution of radiation therapy treatment options for cancer patients,” Christopher Schultz, MD, said in a statement from Froedtert & MCW, which notes the program will collaborate with Children’s Wisconsin to serve pediatric patients.
