Downtown Austin’s busiest party strip turned into a crime scene early Sunday, as what police called an “active attack” on 6th Street left multiple people dead and many more wounded. Officers flooded the entertainment corridor near 6th and Rio Grande after reports of gunfire, while medics tried to reach victims in the middle of a chaotic, crowded scene. Authorities said the suspect was shot by officers as the incident unfolded.
According to KVUE, the Austin Police Department said initial 911 calls came from the area of West 6th and Rio Grande Streets and that “as many as 20 people were shot or injured.” KVUE’s tower cameras showed a heavy law-enforcement response along 6th Street as officers threw up a perimeter, moved crowds back, and worked alongside medics to reach the wounded. Early updates from the station reported that multiple fatalities had been confirmed while investigators secured a sprawling crime scene.
6th Street safety history
Sixth Street has been under a public safety microscope since a deadly mass shooting there in 2021, prompting debates over how to keep the nightlife district from turning violent. In 2025, the city rolled out upgrades that included sturdier fencing and wider sidewalks as part of a phased plan to cut down on fights and reduce injuries to officers, according to MySA. Those changes were aimed at making the weekend bar crowds a little more manageable and the corridor a little less dangerous.
Police response and investigation
Police told KVUE that officers shot the suspect on West 6th Street and that multiple fatalities were under investigation. Detectives and crime-scene units were seen combing the area, collecting evidence, and checking nearby businesses for security footage, according to the station’s early reporting. Authorities asked anyone who has information or video from the area to contact the Austin Police Department as they work to reconstruct what happened and when.
City officials have not yet released a full count of victims or the identity of the suspect, saying families were still being notified. Officials said additional details would be made public once they are confirmed. This is a developing story, and updates will follow as Austin police and city leaders release more information.
