What started as a quiet evening at Sandy Springs’ City Green turned into a scene straight out of a viral clip, after a man was caught on camera shoving two kids off their bicycles, sending one straight into the City Springs fountain. A short time later, officers spotted the same man at a concert in the City Springs entertainment district and led him out in handcuffs.
Surveillance Footage Shows the Push
The Sandy Springs Police Department released surveillance footage that investigators say shows the February 28 encounter and identifies the suspect as Stephen Catterton. According to WSB-TV, the video captures Catterton clapping his hands, then suddenly shoving two juveniles as they ride past him on bicycles. One child goes tumbling into the fountain while the other crashes to the pavement and comes close to hitting his head on the fountain rim.
Concert Arrest Caught on Bodycam
Police say officers later tracked Catterton to a concert at City Springs. Body camera footage, as described by WSB-TV, shows them escorting him out into a hallway before placing him in handcuffs. On the recording, an officer can be heard telling Catterton, "We watched the video...you can tell that to the judge," as Catterton denies being involved.
Police Response and the City Springs Setting
The department urged residents not to shrug off what they saw in the footage, writing that "pushing kids off bicycles is not only unacceptable," in a statement reported by Yahoo News. The confrontation unfolded by the City Green fountain in the City Springs district, at the roundabout in front of the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center, which the city lists at 1 Galambos Way. Sandy Springs PAC notes that the fountain and surrounding roundabout serve as a central feature and gathering spot for the venue.
What Happens Next
Authorities say Catterton is facing charges, although they have not yet released the specific counts. Local prosecutors and future court filings will determine the formal charges. City officials say investigators are still reviewing the surveillance footage and other related evidence as the case moves forward.
