What started as a Clay County traffic stop of a car from Tampa ended with a passenger in handcuffs and two alleged felonies on the books, after deputies say they discovered two firearms and suspected cocaine inside the vehicle.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office shared photos of the haul on Facebook on March 1, 2026, and said the passenger was arrested on two felony charges. Deputies did not release the person’s name in the post and noted that the investigation is still underway.
Deputies Say Traffic Stop Uncovered Guns and Cocaine
According to a Facebook post by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, deputies pulled over a vehicle that was from Tampa and, during a search, found two firearms and a quantity of suspected cocaine. Photos in the post show the seized items laid out for the camera.
The agency said a passenger from the vehicle was booked on two felony counts related to the contraband. The post did not list the exact charges or identify the person who was arrested.
Photos and the Sheriff’s Message
Alongside the images, the sheriff’s office kept its message blunt: “Illegal guns and cocaine are not welcome in Clay County,” the post stated.
The photos show two handguns and evidence bags labeled by deputies as suspected cocaine. According to the sheriff’s office, the passenger was taken into custody after those items were found.
How This Fits Into Local Enforcement
In a 2024 press release, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida described a separate Clay County traffic stop that similarly uncovered fentanyl, cocaine and a loaded firearm and later led to federal charges.
And as detailed by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, multiagency investigations in recent years have seized kilos of narcotics and dozens of firearms in the county, underscoring how traffic stops and joint operations have become a regular front in local drug and gun enforcement.
Charges and Potential Penalties
The sheriff’s office said the passenger in the Tampa vehicle faces two felony counts tied to the seizure. Under Florida law, possession of cocaine is generally treated as a felony under Fla. Stat. 893.13, and certain firearms offenses fall under Fla. Stat. 790.23, which also carries felony penalties in qualifying circumstances.
Deputies have not released additional details about the booking or the suspect’s identity. According to the sheriff’s office, the case remains under investigation.
