A Columbus man has been charged with murder after his wife was found fatally stabbed inside their southwest-side mobile home, according to police. The victim, identified by family as Hairacema “Chema” Sanchez, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was also found injured, taken to a hospital for treatment, and later booked into county custody.
Court records show that Porfirio Sanchez-Eufracio was arrested and charged with murder, then booked into the Franklin County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, according to WBNS. Reports say officers found him with injuries at the front door of the residence before he was taken to a hospital.
What Police Say Happened
Dispatchers received a call reporting a fight at the home just before 9 a.m. on Feb. 23. Officers arrived at a mobile home in the 1600 block of Dyer Road and found both a man and a woman with stab wounds inside, police told reporters, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Jackson Township medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene and transported the man to a local hospital in critical condition.
Homicide detectives say the stabbing appears to have followed an altercation inside the home. Investigators also say there is no ongoing threat to the community, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
Family’s Response
Relatives and friends have launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral and repatriation expenses. A GoFundMe page identifies the victim as Hairacema Sanchez and asks for help to bring her home to Mexico. The fundraiser includes messages from coworkers and describes Sanchez as a devoted mother and a loved member of the community, GoFundMe shows.
Court And Legal Context
Sanchez-Eufracio faces a murder charge that can carry an indefinite prison term and, in some cases, life in prison if he is convicted under Ohio law. Sentencing rules for murder are set out in the Ohio Revised Code. Court records list the booking and charge, and prosecutors will determine the formal counts and any specifications at the defendant’s next hearing, according to 10TV.
Columbus police say the investigation is ongoing. Detectives are processing the scene and reviewing 911 calls and other evidence as the case moves toward its next court date. They are asking anyone with information to contact homicide detectives and say they are not searching for additional suspects, The Columbus Dispatch reports.
