Deputies say they were called Sunday evening to a house in the 4000 block of Board Walk, where they found one person suffering from gunshot wounds and another with head injuries. The wounded person was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and investigators later identified Ervin Spooner as the suspect before booking him into the Rockdale County Jail on a felony murder charge.
What authorities say
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, deputies were dispatched around 8:30 p.m. Sunday after a 911 caller reported an armed robbery at the home on Board Walk. When deputies arrived, they found one person dead from gunshot wounds and a second person suffering head injuries. Officials said that injured person was taken to a nearby hospital for further care.
Arrest and booking
The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office said investigators identified Spooner, of Hampton, as the suspect and took him into custody the following day. Officials reported that Spooner was booked into the Rockdale County Jail on a felony murder charge and noted that detectives are continuing to work the case.
What remains unknown
As FOX 5 Atlanta reports, investigators have not yet released the names of the person who was killed or the person who was injured. The sheriff's office has also not announced a possible motive. Deputies have held back charging documents and other case details while the investigation remains active.
Legal note
Under Georgia law, a death that occurs during the commission of a felony can be prosecuted as murder even if there was no intent to kill. State statute O.C.G.A. § 16-5-1 classifies killings committed during certain felonies as murder, a crime that can carry penalties up to life in prison, according to Justia.
How to help
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office at 770-278-8000 or submit a tip through the sheriff's website. Investigators say they are still reconstructing the sequence of events and are asking nearby residents with security camera footage or anyone who witnessed suspicious activity to come forward.
