A routine laundry run in downtown Patchogue turned frightening on Saturday when a 4-year-old girl was allegedly led out of a laundromat by a man her mother did not know, according to police. The child was later found safe in the Patchogue-Medford Library’s children’s play area just a few doors from the laundromat, and police say she was unharmed.
How Police Say the Search Unfolded
According to Suffolk County Police, the incident began at about 12:08 p.m. Saturday at Laundry Kingdom, 138 East Main St., when a man who was unknown to the mother led the girl out the laundromat’s rear exit. After the mother reported her missing, patrol officers reviewed surveillance footage and canvassed the area.
The child was found in the Patchogue-Medford Library’s children’s play area at 54-60 East Main St., only a few doors from the laundromat. A patrol officer then located and detained the suspect near the business, police said.
Charges and Court Date
Fifth Squad detectives identified the suspect as 38-year-old Carlos Corte of 26 Camille Ave., Patchogue. He was charged with second-degree kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child and with an outstanding warrant, according to Suffolk County Police.
Corte was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip. The department added, “A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.”
Safety Note and Context
Incidents like this are a sharp reminder of how quickly a child can slip out of sight in public spaces and why caregivers often over-prepare for even the simplest errands. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children offers prevention tips, including carrying a recent photo and designating a meeting spot, for parents and guardians, according to NCMEC.
Reporting and Next Steps
The case was first reported by the New York Post, which noted additional local details. Suffolk County Police said detectives remain on the case and asked anyone with information to contact investigators.
