UCLA police arrested a 24-year-old Santa Monica man this week after two UCLA students reported being threatened and prevented from exiting his car, authorities say. The suspect, identified by police as Alexander Schecter, was taken into custody at his Santa Monica home and booked in connection with the campus incident and an unrelated sexual assault from last October. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives say they are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

How police say the events unfolded

UCLA officers responded to the 500 block of Landfair Avenue on March 8 after a report of a possible kidnapping. Investigators say Schecter allegedly kept two UCLA students from leaving his vehicle, then drove to the 400 block of Gayley Avenue, according to FOX 11 Los Angeles. Detectives say they identified the suspect four days later and arrested him at his Santa Monica home. He was booked, then later posted bail.

Detectives say they found an earlier assault

After the initial campus arrest, detectives say they uncovered evidence of a previously unreported sexual assault that took place between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Oct. 12, 2025, in the area of Venice Boulevard and Clarington Avenue, investigators told FOX 11 Los Angeles. “Detectives believe there may be additional unreported victims,” the department said.

Charges, booking, and next steps

Schecter was booked at the Los Angeles County Twin Towers Correctional Facility on counts the UCLA Police Department lists as rape by force, forcible oral copulation, robbery, extortion, and battery. Bail was set at $600,000. Prosecutors are expected to review the case and decide whether to file formal charges. The UCLA Police Department says the investigation remains active as detectives continue to track down leads.
