San Antonio police say a routine traffic stop on the Southwest Side turned wild on Tuesday when a 21-year-old man allegedly bolted from officers, doubled back, slipped into a marked SAPD patrol SUV and drove off before finally being caught.
Officers later recovered the cruiser and detained at least one person, according to police. Authorities said no serious injuries were reported.
The stop happened near Palo Alto Road and Mohawk Street, where investigators say two people ran from the scene and one of them circled back, climbed into the parked patrol vehicle and took off, as reported by KENS 5. Police identified the person taken into custody as 21-year-old Michael Aguirre and said the investigation is ongoing. Officials did not immediately release formal charges or booking details.
Why vehicle thefts matter locally
Motor-vehicle thefts have climbed in San Antonio in recent years, stretching police resources and prompting more targeted efforts to recover stolen cars, according to reporting on local crime trends by the San Antonio Report. City leaders have cited rapid growth, opportunistic thieves and juvenile involvement as key factors behind the spike, while SAPD has leaned on intelligence-driven tactics to respond.
When the stolen vehicle is a marked patrol unit, even briefly, incidents like Tuesday’s underscore how quickly routine enforcement can turn into a fast-moving chase and how vulnerable officers and their equipment can be in those chaotic moments.
Multi-agency response recovered the cruiser
Police say SAPD’s EAGLE air unit, with help from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and Lytle Police Department, tracked down and recovered the stolen patrol SUV, as detailed by KENS 5. Officers took a suspect into custody after the vehicle was located, and authorities reported no serious injuries tied to the incident.
Police said the investigation remains active as they review video footage and other evidence to piece together the full timeline of what happened after the traffic stop.
How residents can protect their vehicles
The San Antonio Police Department’s Vehicle Crimes Unit continues to push the basics: lock your car, remove valuables and never leave key fobs or keys inside a vehicle. The City of San Antonio outlines how to file a report and submit surveillance video on its Vehicle Crimes Unit page (San Antonio Police Department).
Community tips, doorbell video and dashcam footage frequently help detectives reconstruct quick thefts and identify suspects. Residents with information about Tuesday’s incident are asked to contact SAPD or Crime Stoppers.
Police described the case as an active investigation and encouraged anyone with tips or video to come forward. This story will be updated as authorities release more details.
