A helicopter carrying five people crashed Thursday afternoon at Kalalau Beach on Kauai’s Na Pali coast, and county officials said injuries were reported. The remote shoreline landing zone triggered a multi-agency response as rescue crews worked to reach the scene. Details about how many people were hurt and how badly were still limited.
What we know so far
According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the crash happened at about 3:45 p.m. on March 26 at Kalalau Beach and involved a pilot and four passengers. County officials said the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency, Rescue 3 aboard the Kaua‘i Fire Department’s Air 1 helicopter, the U.S. Coast Guard, personnel from the Hanalei Fire Station and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources were responding to the scene. Officials confirmed that injuries were reported but did not immediately release numbers or describe the patients’ conditions.
Responders on scene
A recent press release from Kaua‘i County shows that the county frequently relies on a single rescue helicopter, Air 1, to reach the Kalalau landing zone and pull injured hikers or others out of the valley. With that kind of lean operation, incidents along the beach often demand tight coordination among county fire crews, ocean-safety units and federal partners. Past county statements have underscored how the steep terrain and fast-changing weather can complicate evacuations along the Na Pali coast, especially when rescuers are operating from the ocean or from the air.
Investigations ahead
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board typically investigate tour and charter helicopter crashes to sort out whether mechanical issues, weather conditions or human factors played a role. In a separate Kauai case, a 2024 NTSB preliminary report described a fractured main-rotor drive shaft and explained that investigators retained key components for further testing, which is an example of the kind of technical work that can stretch out inquiries at remote crash sites. Those earlier investigations show that causes are often complicated and can take months to fully untangle.
County officials did not immediately release additional information about Thursday’s crash or the conditions of those on board. They said updates will be provided through official channels as investigators work to determine what happened.
