Four people managed to escape a two-alarm house fire in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood early Friday morning after flames tore through a three-story home on a short dead-end off Walnut Avenue. Firefighters knocked down visible flames on the building's second and third floors and eventually declared the blaze out, city officials said. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Crews Called To Hestia Park Around 2:45 A.M.
According to WCVB, Boston firefighters were dispatched to Hestia Park, the small alley off Walnut Avenue, at about 2:45 a.m. The outlet reports that the home was a large, three-story residence and that crews quickly escalated the response to a two-alarm fire after finding flames shooting from the second and third floors. Four adults inside the building got out on their own while firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
Deputy Chief: Rear Porches Were Worst Hit
"The majority of the flames were on the rear porches of the second and third floors," the deputy chief said, according to WCVB. Fire officials told the station that the narrow, dead-end location complicated the response, but crews were still able to contain the blaze without any reported injuries. Investigators stayed on scene into the morning to try to determine what sparked the fire.
Another Winter Blaze In Roxbury
This fire is the latest early-morning blaze in Roxbury this winter. On Jan. 30, a fierce house fire displaced residents and showed how freezing conditions and snowbanks can hinder emergency access. That earlier incident was detailed in a previous Hoodline report, Roxbury residents displaced. Fire officials say clearing hydrants after storms can make a critical difference in response times.
Boston Fire investigators will continue working to determine the cause of the Hestia Park blaze and are expected to release their findings once they are available. This story will be updated as officials provide more information.
