Traffic along State Highway 46 west of Boerne ground to a halt Tuesday afternoon after a fatal head-on crash forced authorities to shut down the busy Hill Country corridor. Both lanes were closed for hours as emergency crews responded, cleared debris, and assisted those involved. Drivers in the area were told to expect significant delays and to seek alternate routes while the scene was active.
In a Facebook post, the Boerne Fire Department said the 300 block of State Highway 46 West, near Enchanted Springs Ranch, was closed in both directions as of 4:25 p.m. and could remain shut for "upwards of four hours." As reported by WOAI, drivers were urged to use alternate routes around the scene.
Why Highway 46 worries locals
State Highway 46 has been flagged for safety concerns after several serious collisions in recent years. The Boerne Star reported that TxDOT logged 337 crashes on the corridor from 2019–2024, including six that involved fatalities, and has discussed fixes ranging from center turn lanes and rumble strips to a fully divided four-lane highway.
