An Austin man died after a vehicle struck him in the 9300 block of Menchaca Road in South Austin, according to the Austin Police Department. Police identified the pedestrian as Jefferson Gustavo Ramirez Ramirez. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Officers said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators as they opened a follow-up investigation.
What APD says
In a post on X, the department said the collision involved a motor vehicle and a pedestrian in the 9300 block of Menchaca Road and noted that "the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation," according to the Austin Police Department. APD named the victim as Jefferson Gustavo Ramirez Ramirez and said he was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The agency described the incident as Austin's 15th fatal crash of 2026 and said the investigation is pending.
A dangerous corridor
Menchaca Road has become a grim focal point for safety advocates after a string of serious crashes along the corridor. Data compiled by Vision Zero ATX highlights multiple recent pedestrian and vehicle collisions on Menchaca and nearby state-run roads, and advocates have pushed for slower speeds and more protected crossings. Residents and planners say the wide lanes and high speeds leave little margin for people on foot in several segments.
Recent collisions and arrests
The latest death follows other incidents on the same stretch. Earlier this year, police arrested a driver in February after a separate crash in the 9300 block that left a pedestrian seriously injured. The corridor has also seen fatal crashes documented by the city's public information pages, including a March 22, 2025 collision in the 8700 block of Menchaca Road, which underscores the pattern of severe incidents along this route. Those prior cases have fed residents' calls for design changes and stepped-up enforcement.
