Douglas County is in shock after 12-year-old Jada West, a Mason Creek Middle School student, died following an off-campus fight last Thursday. Her family says the confrontation, which relatives describe as the result of ongoing bullying, left her critically injured and led to an emergency trip to a hospital. Villa Rica police and the Douglas County district attorney's office have opened separate investigations into what happened.
What happened
Family members and local officials say videos of the altercation have circulated online and show students clashing as they left the bus. Although West appeared to walk away in the footage, she collapsed shortly afterward and was taken to a children's hospital in Atlanta. Authorities have not released a cause of death, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
School response
The Douglas County School System said the harm did not occur on school property or during school hours and that counselors would be available for students and staff, the district told WSB-TV. School leaders added that they are cooperating with the investigation while working to protect student privacy.
Family posts and online video
Relatives say they posted a short clip and a detailed account of the incident on social media and are calling for accountability and answers from adults who were present when the fight occurred. The family's posts and a sample of the footage were summarized online, as reported by The Nerd Stash.
Investigation and next steps
Villa Rica police have said little publicly while investigators from the Douglas County district attorney's office review the case, and the medical examiner has not yet released an official cause of death. Community members and school officials said they expect authorities to examine video evidence, witness statements, and hospital reports as the inquiry proceeds. Prosecutors will decide whether any charges are warranted based on those findings, officials told WSB-TV.
