Former Wilmington High School junior varsity softball coach and sports photographer Gordon B. Cordell III has admitted in court to secretly recording nude minors with hidden cameras, according to court records. The 48-year-old pleaded guilty this week to multiple charges tied to recordings made in early 2023 and is scheduled for sentencing in Clinton County Common Pleas Court on May 8, 2026. Prosecutors say the cameras were disguised as everyday electronics and that the case involves multiple victims.
According to WKRC Local 12, Cordell pleaded guilty to 13 counts that court documents say involve multiple victims, after he was initially indicted on 22 counts in August 2025. WKRC reports that the plea was entered last week and that the May 8 sentencing date is already on the court calendar.
What investigators say
Court filings reviewed by local journalists say investigators uncovered video files on digital devices and allege that Cordell used a Bluetooth-speaker camera and a charger-block camera to make the recordings. None of the devices were found on school property, according to FOX19. The recordings are alleged to have taken place between January and April 2023. Authorities executed a search warrant at Cordell's home, where they say they recovered evidence that was later presented to the Clinton County prosecutor, leading to the August 2025 indictment.
School's response
Wilmington City Schools stated that Cordell volunteered as an assistant JV softball coach during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons and also served as the district's sports photographer. In a statement posted on the district's website, officials said, "All FBI and BCI background checks were on file and did not reveal any past issues of concern," and noted that the district ended its relationship with Cordell as soon as the investigation began. The district also said that, to its knowledge, no hidden recording devices were found on school property and no students had filed complaints with staff, according to Wilmington City Schools.
Legal next steps
Cordell's guilty plea resolves part of a case that originally listed 22 counts, including voyeurism and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, according to local coverage. Prosecutors have not said publicly whether the plea deal includes a recommended sentence. The May 8 hearing in Clinton County Common Pleas Court will determine his punishment, WCPO reported.
Broader context
Cases involving hidden-camera voyeurism and sexually explicit recordings of minors have led to lengthy prison terms elsewhere. In one example, a former coach in Florida received a 20-year sentence after pleading guilty, according to the Department of Justice. Extensive digital evidence and storage media can play a major role in how judges weigh sentencing.
