The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said it is mourning Deputy Mitchell's death and confirmed that he died in the line of duty. Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. praised Mitchell's commitment to service, saying, "What greater love than a man's service for his community? Willing to lay down his life for others," as reported by WXII. According to WXII, Mitchell previously served with the King Police Department before joining the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said a memorial will be held in front of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office on North Church Street where community members can pay their respects. That building is listed on the county website at 301 North Church Street in downtown Winston-Salem, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. Officials said more information about the crash will be released when it becomes available, and WXII reported that investigators had not yet announced the cause or circumstances.
