A pre-dawn crash that erupted in flames left four people dead in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, according to state troopers. Pennsylvania State Police confirmed the deaths yesterday.
Video aired by KDKA showed emergency crews working through a blackened crash scene while investigators picked through twisted wreckage. CBS News Pittsburgh reported that KDKA-TV reporter Ricky Sayer shared on-the-ground details from the site of the collision.
The deadly wreck adds to a troubling pattern on local roads. In January, homicide charges were filed after a crash that killed a school-van driver, according to WPXI. That earlier case, along with other fatal collisions in recent years, has kept traffic safety high on the radar for officials and residents.
Investigation under way
Pennsylvania State Police said troopers remained at the scene and that the cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to CBS News Pittsburgh. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.
What officials and residents are hearing
Coverage of recent deadly crashes has fueled renewed calls for safer driving habits and closer attention to high-risk intersections and highway stretches, according to reporting by WPXI. Emergency crews often shut down affected roads while they investigate and clear debris, leading to long backups for commuters and neighbors trying to get through.
Authorities have not released additional information about the wreck or the victims’ identities. The investigation remains active.
