An 18-year-old driver was killed Tuesday when their car left State Highway OO and slammed into a tree just north of Fredericktown in Madison County. Emergency responders pronounced the teen dead at the scene, authorities said.
What Troopers Reported
According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the single-vehicle crash happened as the driver headed south on State Highway OO, went off the roadway and hit a tree north of Fredericktown. Troopers from MSHP's Troop E responded, with local emergency crews assisting at the scene. The patrol's online crash log lists a fatal collision in Madison County on Tuesday.
Coroner's Office Confirms Death
Madison County Coroner Collin Follis pronounced the driver dead at the scene, KSDK reports. Officials have not released the teen's name, citing the need to notify family and continue the investigation.
Why Teen Crashes Turn Deadly So Often
Single-vehicle run-off wrecks that end in a car hitting a tree are a familiar and especially deadly pattern for young drivers. Motor-vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and newly licensed drivers face a much higher fatal-crash rate per mile driven, according to the CDC. Safety resources note that nearly half of all fatal crashes involving teen drivers are single-vehicle incidents, a trend that makes rural roads particularly dangerous.
Investigation Still Underway
Authorities said the crash remains under investigation and that troopers and the Madison County Coroner's Office handled the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E or the Madison County Sheriff's Office, according to local reporting.
