The Honolulu Police Department is asking for the public’s help in tracking down 30-year-old Kaleipilialohamaikalani Zuttermeister, who officers say slipped out of police custody on Wednesday evening near Castle Medical Center in Kailua. District 4 patrol officers had arrested Zuttermeister on a charge of first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, and police say he took off while still in handcuffs. He is described as a Hawaiian male weighing about 180 pounds, with long black wavy hair, a black beard and brown eyes.
How he slipped away
According to the Honolulu Police Department, Zuttermeister escaped custody at Adventist Health Castle on Ulukahiki Street at around 5:48 p.m. Wednesday after being handcuffed in the front. Police say he was last seen wearing a brown flannel jacket and black pants and has a lower-lip piercing with no jewelry. Investigators reported that he had already been booked on the unauthorized-control charge before being taken to the hospital, and urged anyone with information to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300.
Where the escape happened
The incident unfolded at Adventist Health Castle, the Windward Oʻahu hospital that serves Kailua and nearby neighborhoods. On its website, Adventist Health Castle lists the campus address as 640 Ulukahiki St.
What police want you to do
HPD is asking anyone who may have seen Zuttermeister or captured him on dashcam, doorbell or other surveillance video to save that footage and get in touch with authorities. Tips can be called in to 911 or Honolulu CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300, and can also be submitted anonymously online or through the P3 Tips app, according to Hawaii News Now.
Not the first hospital escape
Escapes from medical facilities on Oʻahu have happened before. In October 2024, HPD reported that a suspect fled custody at Pali Momi Medical Center before officers later located and arrested him, according to a Honolulu Police news release. That earlier case reflects the department's practice of quickly releasing descriptions and turning to the community for help whenever a detainee leaves a hospital while still in custody.
The search for Zuttermeister is still underway, and police are warning the public not to approach him if spotted, according to the Honolulu Police Department. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300.
