Huntersville is about to get its own source for supersized margaritas. Rio 150, the Lake Norman-area Mexican restaurant known for oversized drinks, is opening a new location near the lake, bringing its Baja-style menu and big-format cocktails closer to the Lake Norman crowd while expanding the family-run chain’s footprint across the Charlotte metro.
Huntersville site and timeline
Rio 150 lists its upcoming Huntersville spot at 16801 Caldwell Creek Drive and tags the location as “coming soon,” according to Rio150.com. The move was first reported by the Charlotte Observer, which noted the restaurant will be the chain’s fifth Charlotte-area outpost. Co-owner Rashel Limper told the paper the new dining room would start welcoming guests “very soon.”
What it’s replacing
The Caldwell Creek address is currently home to La Victoria Cocina Mexicana & Bar. The paper reports that La Victoria said on the restaurant’s Instagram it will close “this week,” clearing the way for Rio 150’s build-out at the site. Local business listings also show La Victoria at that address, with MapQuest listing the same location, underscoring a quick turnover for the strip center.
Menu and the biggest margarita
Rio 150 leans into its reputation as the home of the “BIGGEST margarita” in the area, a claim highlighted by America's Best Restaurants as a major draw. On the food side, the restaurant’s menu features authentic Baja-style staples such as fajitas, carne asada, arroz con pollo and more than a dozen specialty tacos, according to Rio150.com.
What to expect
Beyond Limper’s “very soon” comment, owners have not shared a specific opening date, so the exact timeline remains up in the air. Hungry (and thirsty) locals will likely need to keep an eye on the restaurant’s official channels for the next round of updates as permitting and build-out move forward.
