Three years after a man was fatally shot inside a west Phoenix apartment, his family says they are still waiting for answers. Relatives spent Sunday marking the painful anniversary and renewing their public plea for tips as investigators continue to search for the shooter. The unresolved killing has left loved ones desperate for closure while detectives say the case is still very much open.
What investigators say
Police records show officers were called just before 10:30 a.m. on March 15, 2023, for reports of a shooting at 4326 North 35th Avenue. They found 45-year-old Michael Anthony Amarillas suffering from gunshot wounds, and he later died at a hospital, according to a media advisory from the Phoenix Police Department. Detectives took over the case and describe the investigation as active but still unsolved.
Suspect description and getaway
Investigators have released surveillance images and describe the suspect as a Hispanic or Native American man about 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-10 and roughly 200 to 240 pounds who was wearing a white construction helmet at the time of the shooting, according to ABC15. Authorities say the man got away in a silver Jeep Gladiator, described as a newer model with large tires and dark rims, and they remain interested in any past or present sightings of that vehicle.
Reward offered
Silent Witness has posted that tips leading to an arrest or indictment in the case may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, and the nonprofit stresses that callers can stay anonymous. According to Silent Witness, tips can be submitted online or by phone at 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377) and 480-TESTIGO for Spanish speakers.
Family pleads for answers
"I have no closure. I’ve been living like this for three years," Michael's mother, Teresa Moreno, told FOX 10 Phoenix. Relatives remember Amarillas as a devoted father and say every tip, no matter how small it might seem, could be the one that finally moves the investigation forward.
Part of a broader problem
The case is one of dozens of 2023 homicides across the Valley that remain unsolved, according to a list compiled by ABC15. Advocates and investigators say rewards and public tips have helped crack cold cases in the past, but many files stay stalled without fresh leads.
How to help
Anyone with information about the killing of Michael Amarillas is asked to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or leave an anonymous tip through Silent Witness. According to the Phoenix Police Department, detectives are still investigating the 2023 shooting and no arrests have been announced.
