About half of Fort Vancouver High School’s educators either walked out of a morning staff meeting or called in sick on Wednesday, leaving many classes to scramble for substitute coverage and some students grouped into larger spaces while administrators tried to keep the day afloat. The coordinated absence followed the appearance of an Instagram account that posted altered images and AI-generated videos of staff, which teachers said left them feeling unsafe and publicly shamed.
District Flags Account To Instagram And Police
Vancouver Public Schools told families it had reported the Instagram account both to the platform and to local law enforcement, and that it postponed this week’s honor-roll activities while officials assessed the posts. As reported by KGW, district leaders said they did not believe there was a credible, immediate threat, but they added staffing supports to help keep students and staff safe.
Classes Scrambled As Subs And Officers Step In
The wave of staff absences meant the school had to call in an unusually large number of substitutes and, in some cases, combine classes in bigger spaces such as the auditorium while coverage was arranged. As reported by KOIN, district resource officers and Vancouver police were on campus to support substitute teachers and help maintain order throughout the day. Some parents, according to local reports, chose to keep their children home because of both the staffing shortages and the anxiety stirred up by the posts.
Why Fed-Up Educators Stepped Back
Teachers and students said the posts crossed a line by using manipulated photos and AI-generated clips to place staff in embarrassing or seemingly threatening situations, raising concerns about personal safety and professional fallout. “The social media account upset many students and hurt teachers,” a student identified as Sophia told KGW. The Vancouver Education Association said it did not authorize the morning walkout, while also expressing sympathy for educators rattled by the account.
Deepfake Harassment And The Law
Washington state law criminalizes the nonconsensual disclosure of intimate images and has been updated to include fabricated intimate images created with digital tools, giving investigators legal avenues when manipulated content rises to the level of an offense. The statute is outlined in RCW 9A.86.010, and there has been recent federal attention to nonconsensual intimate imagery on Congress.gov. International reporting has documented a rise in AI-generated harassment and deepfake abuse in school settings, a trend that experts say makes rapid reporting and clear school policies essential; The Guardian has examined similar incidents abroad.
What Families Can Do Now
Fort Vancouver High lists resources and a reporting form for bullying, harassment and safety threats on its website, and the school’s contact page includes attendance and administrative phone numbers for families who need them. Those details are available on the Fort Vancouver site at Fort Vancouver High School. According to local reporting, district officials and local authorities say investigators are looking into the Instagram account while the school continues to monitor campus safety and provide supports to staff and students.
