Gunfire shattered the quiet at Gregory Cove Apartments early Sunday morning, leaving one man dead and another recovering from a gunshot wound after what investigators say was a shooting in a breezeway at the Eastside complex.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, officers were called to the apartments on Edenfield Road around 1:40 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing shots. Responding officers found a man near the parking lot suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A second man, described by investigators as a guest at the complex, later showed up at an HCA emergency room on Merrill Road with a gunshot wound to his leg and is recovering.
What investigators say
Detectives told First Coast News that both men were shot in the breezeway of building 10. The man found near the parking lot was described as being about 30 to 35 years old. He had been shot at least once and was later pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital, while the second man was treated for a wound to his leg.
JSO’s Homicide Unit spent Sunday morning working the scene, processing the area around the breezeway and nearby parking lot for evidence as neighbors woke up to a heavy police presence.
Police details
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office told First Coast News that investigators do not yet have any suspect information to release, Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said.
Rudlaff also noted that “it is not uncommon for this area to hear gunshots during the night,” a reality that gives this latest round of shots a grim familiarity for some residents. Detectives are asking neighbors who may have video or first-hand information about what happened to come forward.
Where to send tips
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call its non-emergency line at 904-630-0500 or email [email protected]. Those who prefer to stay anonymous can submit tips to First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
Neighborhood context
Gregory Cove has been on law enforcement’s radar before. Action News Jax reported that a May 2023 standoff at the complex led to an evacuation and the temporary closure of Edenfield Road. More recently, the property appeared on a 2025 News4Jax list of buildings with a high number of eviction filings, a trend local researchers have connected to increased calls for service and broader neighborhood safety worries.
Investigators continue
As of Sunday morning, JSO detectives had made no arrests in the case and were continuing to investigate. Authorities are again urging anyone with doorbell footage, security camera clips, or cellphone video from the early-morning hours to contact the sheriff’s office or Crime Stoppers with any information that might help piece together what happened in the building 10 breezeway.
