A quiet Sunday afternoon in Kihei ended in tragedy when a 64-year-old man was found fatally stabbed inside a home, prompting Maui police to open a second-degree murder investigation.
Officers were called to the residence at about 2 p.m. on March 29, where they found the man unresponsive with apparent stab wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 36-year-old Kihei man was also found on the property. After officers issued commands and used less-lethal force, the younger man was taken into custody and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for evaluation.
According to Maui Now, the investigation remains active as detectives work to piece together what happened inside the home that afternoon.
Legal context
Police have classified the case as a second-degree murder investigation, though authorities have not yet announced formal charges. Under Hawaii law, “murder in the second degree” is defined in statute as a felony that can carry a life sentence with the possibility of parole, depending on how the court applies sentencing rules. The exact legal language is outlined in HRS §707-701.5.
