A 41-year-old Wailuku man was taken into custody on Monday after a tense domestic incident in Kīhei, where police say he barricaded himself inside a home, claimed he was armed and threatened to hurt himself. Negotiators eventually talked him out, and no officers were hurt in the process.
According to the Maui Police Department, officers were called to a home on Anapa Place in Kīhei for a reported abuse case involving a family or household member. The man then locked himself in an attached bathroom, prompting police to secure the area and call in the department’s Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team, as first reported by KITV.
Police Response and Arrest
After several hours of negotiations, officers arrested the man at 12:29 p.m., with no reported injuries to neighbors or responding law enforcement. Investigators later determined he had three outstanding warrants at the time of the standoff. Police have not released his name, citing pending charging decisions.
Medical Care and Legal Status
Paramedics treated the suspect at the scene, then transported him to Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku, which lists its address as 221 Mahalani Street. Maui Health describes the facility as the Valley Isle’s primary acute-care hospital.
It was not immediately clear whether additional charges would be filed or whether the man remained under arrest following his transport, according to the initial report to KITV.
How This Fits for Maui
Similar barricade calls on Maui have triggered the deployment of tactical and negotiation units in the past. In a 2020 Pāʻia incident, a standoff ended only after the suspect shot himself in the hand and surrendered, as reported by Maui Now. Local officials have said that bringing in specialized teams is standard procedure whenever a suspect is believed to be armed or suicidal.
