A routine ride on a Charlotte Area Transit System bus turned violent when a fight between two passengers ended with one man stabbed in the knee and another in handcuffs, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Officers say the suspect, Kannapolis resident Micah Ragin, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and is being held without bond. The injured rider was taken to the hospital and needed nine stitches.
What Police Say Happened
CATS staff and court filings state that Ragin and another man were told to get off the bus after a heated verbal confrontation. Prosecutors say that is when Ragin stabbed the other rider in the knee, threw the knife into a nearby creek, then climbed back onto the bus. Cellphone video captured the aftermath as Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers pulled the bus over on Woodland Drive in east Charlotte. Authorities charged Ragin with assault with a deadly weapon and say the victim required nine stitches, according to WSOC-TV.
Transit Safety In The Spotlight
Concerns about violence on CATS have been simmering for years, and this latest case only adds fuel to the fire. A deadly stabbing on the Lynx Blue Line in August 2025 pushed the agency to promise security upgrades, including more patrols and new cameras, as reported by WRAL. Earlier, the 2022 killing of CATS bus driver Ethan Rivera prompted an outcry for stronger protections for operators, according to reporting by WFAE.
Charges And Next Steps
Court documents show Ragin faces one count of assault with a deadly weapon and is being held without bond. Police say the case remains under investigation and have not yet released information about a court date, according to WSOC-TV.
Cellphone footage of the stopped bus has been referenced in local coverage, and investigators say they are still working to piece together what sparked the confrontation in the first place. This story will be updated as more details emerge from court records and police reports.
