Cornelius police and Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue, working with North Carolina Wildlife officers, recovered the body of a missing boater from Lake Norman off Henderson Road on Wednesday. The man's kayak was found ashore before responders later located his body in the water, and authorities say the victim's family has been notified. Officials have not released his name as state wildlife investigators continue their work at the scene.
Search Began After Call About Suspicious Vessel
Cornelius police said a call came in around 3 p.m. Wednesday about a suspicious vessel on Lake Norman off Henderson Road. Responders found the man's kayak on shore with no sign of the boater, which triggered a multi-agency search on the water. Crews ultimately recovered the man's body. Lt. Tracy Crosby of the Cornelius Police Department urged people to wear life jackets and follow boater-safety rules, saying, "Use boater safety and use your personal flotation devices is the main thing," as reported by WSOC.
Agencies On Scene And Investigation
According to a Facebook update from the Cornelius Police Department, Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue assisted North Carolina Wildlife officers in the drowning-recovery operation, and the family of the missing boater was notified once the body was found. The post notes that NC Wildlife is leading the investigation into the drowning. The Cornelius Police Department's Facebook post provided the initial public update from the scene.
Local Safety Context
Local officials often use incidents like this to remind boaters that life jackets are not optional. Spectrum Local News reported that Lake Patrol officers call the life jacket "the seatbelt of the water" and noted roughly 20 drownings on Lake Norman over the past three years, with many victims not wearing personal flotation devices. Training exercises and public-education efforts are common in the run-up to the busy boating season, as Spectrum Local News noted.
What Authorities Are Saying Now
Authorities have not yet released the victim's name, and NC Wildlife continues to lead the investigation into the drowning. Anyone with information was asked to contact the Cornelius Police Department. No additional details had been released as of Wednesday, according to WSOC.
