A late-night Delta Air Lines departure out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport never made it off the ground early Tuesday after the crew spotted a problem with the jet’s left engine and declared an emergency. Airport fire crews and airline technicians moved in to check out the aircraft while passengers were set up with new travel plans.
Engine Trouble Halts Overnight Departure
Delta flight 1560, carrying 199 passengers and six crew members, was preparing to leave ATL around 1 a.m. when the pilots reported an issue with the left engine and called an emergency. Fire department units responded to inspect the aircraft, and Delta’s maintenance team began a full evaluation. The airline said affected travelers would be rebooked on other flights and offered an apology for the late-night disruption.
"Nothing is more important than the safety of our people and customers, and we apologize to our customers for their experience," Delta said, according to Atlanta News First.
Routine Route, Rough Start
DL1560 is a regularly scheduled run from Atlanta to Tampa. Public flight-tracking data list the route as Hartsfield-Jackson to Tampa International Airport, according to PlaneMapper.
What An In-Flight Emergency Call Triggers
When a flight crew declares an emergency, air traffic controllers and airport teams pivot quickly to give that aircraft priority. That can include clearing airspace or taxi routes, staging rescue equipment and lining up inspection resources so crews and technicians can focus squarely on safety while the jet is checked out.
The Federal Aviation Administration’s Air Traffic Control handbook directs controllers to "provide maximum assistance to aircraft in distress" and adjust traffic and ground operations as needed, according to the FAA.
Another Headache At An Already Strained ATL
The grounded departure lands in the middle of a rocky stretch for travelers at ATL, where earlier this month cancellations, long TSA lines and crowded gates have piled on the frustration and put extra pressure on Delta’s operation. Recent coverage detailed hundreds of cancellations and significant delays as the airline worked to stabilize its schedule, as reported by Atlanta News First.
Delta said its maintenance teams are continuing to evaluate the affected aircraft and that the airline is working to support customers and get them to their destinations as safely and as quickly as possible. This story will be updated as additional details are released by the airline or the airport.
