An electrical fire ripped through The Mark Austin early Wednesday, forcing hundreds of West Campus residents out of their beds and into the street while firefighters swarmed the high-rise. Students and other tenants were evacuated in the middle of the night, and many spent the morning scrambling to line up temporary housing. Management says it is moving residents into hotels while investigators assess the building.
The blaze was reported on the eighth floor of the 17-story complex on Wednesday, March 25. The Austin Fire Department says the cause is still under investigation, and more than 400 residents were displaced and moved to nearby hotels with reservations booked for at least a week, according to KXAN.
About the building
The Mark is a Landmark Properties-managed student housing complex at 812 W. 23rd Street, a short walk from the University of Texas campus. Landmark opened the property in 2023 and lists dozens of units and hundreds of beds in its West Campus portfolio, and the building advertises modern amenities aimed at students. The Mark Austin has leasing and contact information for residents.
Residents say alarms failed, management pushes back
Tenants told reporters they woke to smoke, confusion, and alarms that they say did not work as they expected, with many adding that they had already been dealing with ongoing electrical problems in several units. One resident, Erika Farr, said she "woke up confused about what happened in the unit four floors above her." Landmark Properties told reporters that "all fire alarm systems functioned as designed," that residents have been relocated to hotels at no additional cost, and that residents will still be responsible for rent, although the company will provide a prorated daily rent credit for those with alternative arrangements, according to KXAN.
What happens next
The Austin Fire Department continues its investigation and has not released a final cause or a timetable for residents to return. Students and tenants said they want clearer communication from management and are watching for inspection reports and notices about repairs. Officials typically issue safety updates through the property manager or the fire department once checks are complete.
