A late-night crash on East Memorial Boulevard in Lakeland left a Winter Haven man dead and another driver hospitalized, according to police. The multi-vehicle wreck happened Monday around 10:45 p.m. near Interlachen Parkway and temporarily shut down lanes on the busy corridor.
What Investigators Say
According to Tampa Free Press, Lakeland police say a westbound bronze Ford SUV driven by 49-year-old Jeffrey R. Allen left the roadway, hit a guardrail and then spun back into the eastbound lanes. There, it collided with a silver GMC driven by 49-year-old Deldrick A. Leonard of Winter Haven.
Emergency crews from the Lakeland Police Department, Lakeland Fire Department and Polk County Fire Rescue performed life-saving measures at the scene before both drivers were rushed to Lakeland Regional Health. Leonard later died at the hospital, and Allen remained hospitalized, according to the report.
Hospital And Emergency Response
Both drivers were taken to Lakeland Regional Health's medical center, the area's primary receiving hospital for serious trauma. According to Lakeland Regional Health, the system serves Polk County and surrounding communities and handles a high volume of emergency cases.
Why Memorial Boulevard Matters
Memorial Boulevard has been flagged by local reporting and traffic analysts as one of Lakeland's most dangerous corridors. A 2025 analysis found that the eastern stretch of the roadway accounted for a disproportionate share of pedestrian and cyclist deaths.
As WUSF reports, the city has adopted Vision Zero strategies and pushed for engineering and enforcement changes. City documents also outline plans for additional enforcement tools and intersection upgrades along Memorial Boulevard aimed at reducing severe crashes.
What Investigators Want
The Lakeland Police Department's Traffic Homicide Unit is still processing evidence and treating the case as an open investigation. According to Tampa Free Press, authorities are asking anyone with information or video related to the crash to contact Traffic Crash Investigator Officer Travis Payne at [email protected].
