Lazy Bird, the açaí smoothie and juice bar that landed on Santa Monica Boulevard in 2021, has quietly shut down its West Hollywood outpost. Neighbors say a moving van pulled up to 8730 Santa Monica Boulevard on Thursday and cleared out the shop, leaving the storefront shuttered. The brand still lists an Anaheim location on its website, and the owners have not issued any public statement about the closure.
Moving van, tenants say, business was struggling.
As reported by WEHO Times, a source said the shop never pulled in enough foot traffic to make the numbers work. One neighboring tenant told the outlet, "People are just not supporting businesses like they used to." Another tenant said, "They have been struggling since COVID, and a lot of people are behind on the rent." The same report noted that crews and a moving van were seen emptying the unit on Thursday. In earlier coverage, WEHO Times detailed how the West Hollywood shop opened in 2021, taking over a space that previously housed Locali and Cake Balls.
Brand still lists an Anaheim outpost.
Lazy Bird's website bills the company as operating "Since 2019" and shows an Anaheim location at 143 W Center Street Promenade, suggesting the chain’s California footprint has narrowed rather than disappeared entirely. That mismatch, an active company listing while the WeHo storefront sits cleared out, is a familiar sight when small operators exit quickly, and online directories lag what is happening on the block.
Closures add to turnover on Santa Monica Boulevard.
Lazy Bird’s closure is the latest shakeup along Santa Monica Boulevard, where açaí and wellness-focused cafes have been turning over with unsettling regularity in the Rainbow District. WeHo Online reported that RioZonas Açaí also cleared out its space earlier, and coverage of the broader L.A. dining scene has flagged tourism dips, rising costs, and labor pressures as serious headwinds for small food and beverage operators. The Los Angeles Times recently cataloged many of those same challenges across the region.
What’s next for the space
For now, the unit at 8730 Santa Monica Boulevard sits empty. Online maps and directories list the West Hollywood shop as closed, even as Lazy Bird’s website continues to reference the address. No replacement tenant has been publicly announced, and the darkened storefront joins a growing line of recent turnovers in the Rainbow District. This story will be updated if the owner or property manager issues an official statement.
