Lehman High School in Kyle has a brand-new way to take center stage. On Feb. 28, the campus officially opened a $53 million fine-arts facility that brings an 800-seat auditorium, a scene shop, two classrooms and added storage under one roof. The Lehman Vertical Team Auditorium’s grand opening pulled in students, parents, and neighbors for performances, guided tours, and a first look at the building that is set to become the district’s main arts hub and a go-to venue for big concerts and district events.
Grand opening and programming
The district turned the ribbon-cutting into a full-on showcase. Students performed monologues and musical-theater numbers while rotating through tours of the new spaces. Coverage from Community Impact notes that the celebration mixed short performances with walkthroughs so guests could see the classrooms, backstage areas, and support spaces in action. Dance, choir, mariachi, band, and orchestra groups all took turns onstage to preview how the auditorium will function once the school year’s performance schedule kicks into high gear.
Funding and bond background
The renovation and expansion were funded through Proposition B of Hays CISD’s 2023 bond program, according to district planning materials. The Hays CISD bond planning worksheet lists an “LHS Auditorium, Theater Classrooms and CTE Classrooms” line item estimated at roughly $48.3 million, describing an 800-seat theater with a scene shop and classroom space. In that document, the auditorium is framed as a cornerstone investment in the district’s fine-arts and career and technical education upgrades under the 2023 bond cycle.
Scale and what it means for students
Lehman serves roughly 2,100 students, so the district expects the new auditorium to ease cramped practice conditions and open up performance opportunities across ensembles and theater programs. The Texas Tribune school profile lists Lehman’s enrollment at about 2,093, highlighting just how many students could cycle through the new stage and classrooms each year. Purpose-built classrooms and a dedicated scene shop are expected to make larger productions more realistic and give teachers and student groups more flexibility in scheduling classes, rehearsals, and after-school events.
Next steps and community access
Hays CISD Communications has shared a spring fine-arts calendar and campus newsletter outlining which concerts, rehearsals, and performances will move into the new auditorium first. The district has said that more information on public-ticketed events will roll out as the season ramps up.
