Security footage making the rounds on Wednesday shows a man apparently trying to pull a huge amount of fuel from a Lodi gas station, sparking fresh worries about safety and what, exactly, counts as a serious crime at the pump.
The short, grainy clip appears to show someone pumping or loading fuel in a way that suggests an attempt to take a large quantity, according to CBS News Sacramento. The segment does not offer much context about who the person is or whether officers detained or arrested anyone at the scene.
Lodi Has Seen Big Fuel Heists Before
This incident is landing in a city that has already had a major fuel-theft scare. In April 2025, KCRA reported what authorities described as a sophisticated operation at a Kludt Oil site, where thieves allegedly installed a bypass device and walked off with roughly 6,500 gallons of diesel. “They’d pump 32 gallons, but it would only show three-tenths of a gallon,” the station owner told KCRA when the scheme was discovered.
Fuel Theft Tied To Bigger Cargo Crime Wave
Fuel siphoning is not happening in a vacuum. Experts say it fits into a broader surge in cargo and supply-chain crime. Verisk CargoNet’s 2024 analysis found record cargo-theft activity and singled out California for a noticeable rise in incidents. That backdrop helps explain why some thieves appear to be shifting toward high-value, easy-to-move commodities like fuel.
Felony-Level Costs And Fire Hazards
Under California law, taking property worth more than $950 can be prosecuted as grand theft, which prosecutors may treat as a felony, according to California Penal Code §487. Authorities also warn that siphoning, drilling, or otherwise tampering with underground or vehicle tanks can trigger spills and fire hazards, a risk documented in a bulletin from WRTAC on fuel-theft incidents.
The brief CBS clip does not include any police statement about the latest Lodi case. Anyone who was at the station or has relevant information is being encouraged to reach out to local law enforcement or the station’s owners with tips or video.
