Because the terrain below the bridge was too steep and remote for a ground ambulance to safely reach, Care Flight was called in to airlift the driver to a hospital with major injuries. Under California Vehicle Code section 22350, known as the Basic Speed Law, drivers can be cited for traveling faster than is reasonable for prevailing weather and visibility conditions — even if they're under the posted limit, according to FindLaw. Second Big Rig Crash on I-80 in Just Two Days
Friday's incident came only two days after another big rig driver was killed when a semi-truck ran off eastbound I-80 and crashed into a fence near the State Route 89 junction in Truckee, according to CBS News Sacramento. That crash also blocked lanes and left a passenger with minor injuries.
