A midday walk through a Long Beach crosswalk ended in tragedy Tuesday when a woman was hit and killed at 4th Street and Ximeno Avenue. Fire crews rushed in and tried lifesaving measures on the street, but police say she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police: Driver Cooperated; No Sign of Impairment
According to the Long Beach Police Department, the collision happened around 12:57 p.m. when a 2003 Toyota 4Runner heading east on 4th Street turned left onto Ximeno Avenue and struck a pedestrian who was in a marked crosswalk. The driver, a 53-year-old Long Beach resident, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this stage, detectives say they do not believe impaired driving, speed, or distracted driving contributed to the crash.
Collision Investigation detectives are asking anyone who saw what happened to contact Detective Joseph Johnson at (562) 570-7355 or submit an anonymous tip through LA Crime Stoppers. The department is withholding the victim’s name until her next of kin can be notified, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
City Safety Programs and Intersection History
The fatal crash comes as Long Beach continues to pour resources into pedestrian safety. The city’s health department previously received a $346,500 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to support walk-and-roll efforts and distracted-driving programs. The California Office of Traffic Safety has spotlighted Long Beach projects among its 2024 grant program highlights, while the City of Long Beach's Safe Streets progress report tracks previous fatal collisions, including a 2021 pedestrian death at 4th Street and Ximeno Avenue, as officials weigh engineering, enforcement, and education strategies.
What Officials Are Asking
Investigators are still processing evidence from the scene and interviewing witnesses, and no arrests or citations have been announced. Authorities emphasize that the details released so far are preliminary and say the Collision Investigation detail will provide updates as the case develops.
