Mankato is officially putting shovels where its mouth is. On Tuesday, the City of Mankato and a slate of community partners broke ground on Poplar Apartments, a new supportive-housing project just west of downtown that they are calling a cornerstone in the city’s push to reduce homelessness. The development will offer long-term apartments paired with on-site case management and health and employment supports, all aimed at helping residents achieve stability and stay that way.
Project Details And Timeline
According to the City of Mankato, Poplar Apartments is designed for individuals and families who have experienced homelessness and will include on-site services to support them. Construction is expected to wrap up in spring 2027. The city directs residents to the City of Mankato website for additional details about the project, which officials describe as part of a broader strategic priority to end homelessness and expand local housing options.
Design, Units, and Services
Plans filed with the city call for a roughly 40-unit, three-story building that will mix studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments. The layout also includes a community room, office space for service providers, and outdoor common areas. Local reporting by CNHI notes that the Blue Earth County Board has pledged $2 million toward the development and that the city has agreed to provide $100,000, rental assistance vouchers, and about 1.56 acres of city-owned land for the site. Developers, including Trellis Co., plan to match the housing with case management plus health and employment supports to help tenants regain long-term stability.
Partners And Funding
According to the City of Mankato, Trellis Co., Partners for Housing, and Minnesota Housing are among the key collaborators behind Poplar Apartments. City officials have labeled the groundbreaking a “major milestone” in their homelessness strategy and again point residents to the City of Mankato website for updates as work progresses. Partners for Housing and Connections Shelter are identified as service providers that will handle case management and shelter referrals once the building opens.
Site And Neighborhood
Project documents and city mapping place the Poplar Apartments site along Poplar Street near Linder Avenue, just northwest of Cub Foods West, on land the city has previously used for snow storage in winter. The Development Tracker lists the project address as 751 Poplar Street. At the same time, local coverage from CNHI describes the lot as city-owned and notes that an earlier neighborhood meeting on the proposal drew only one attendee. City planners say the location is expected to give residents quick access to transit and nearby services.
Next Steps And Expected Impact
With the ceremonial dirt now turned, construction crews will move from site preparation into foundation work and utility hookups in the coming months, while partners continue fundraising for a second-phase shelter they hope to add later. Partners for Housing, which operates shelters and transitional housing in the region, is slated to play a central role in connecting future tenants with on-site supports once units are ready. Officials say they expect Poplar Apartments to ease pressure on local shelters by giving more households a stable place to rebuild their lives.
