A Sunday afternoon crossing on West Girard Avenue turned deadly in North Philadelphia when a 27-year-old man was struck and killed while walking mid-block. The crash happened around 2 p.m. on the 1600 block of West Girard, and the man was pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m. A woman who was crossing with him was also hit and taken to the hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. Police say the driver stayed at the scene.
What police say
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, a 36-year-old man was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang eastbound on Girard when the two pedestrians stepped into the street mid-block. Investigators say the driver tried to avoid them by veering into the oncoming lane but still struck both. The male victim suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m. NBC10 reports the driver remained on scene, called 911, and that the Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Unit is handling the case.
Where this fits in the city's safety push
As outlined by the City of Philadelphia, North Philadelphia is one of several areas identified as a hotspot for pedestrian injuries and fatalities, with officials calling targeted engineering changes and stepped-up enforcement key priorities. A recent analysis by The Philadelphia Inquirer found that traffic deaths in the city remain elevated compared with pre-pandemic years, underscoring the broader safety challenge that leaders say they are trying to tackle.
Investigation ongoing
The crash remains under investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Unit, NBC10 Philadelphia reports. Detectives have not released additional information about the driver or any potential charges. As in similar cases, authorities are expected to review witness statements and any available video footage as part of their probe. The department has not said how long the investigation might take.
City response and safety measures
City officials have moved in recent years to expand street-safety projects and have earmarked funding for Vision Zero efforts in the FY26 budget plan, which city materials say will support targeted safety investments. Girard Avenue has been the site of other serious crashes in recent years, a pattern that has fueled calls from residents and advocates for more engineering changes and stricter enforcement along busy corridors. In October 2025, 6ABC reported on a separate fatal collision on a different stretch of Girard.
