What started as an early morning prowler call on a quiet Tampa street ended with a K‑9 takedown and a handful of felony charges, according to deputies.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says 56-year-old Anthony Holmes was spotted entering multiple vehicles in the 4400 block of Ranchwood Lane just before 1 a.m. last Friday. The agency's Aviation Section watched from above and guided ground units into the neighborhood. When deputies warned that a K‑9 would be deployed if he did not comply, they say Holmes took off on foot. A sheriff's dog later tracked him down and helped take him into custody.

How deputies tracked the suspect
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, aviation crews watched Holmes enter several vehicles and directed responding deputies to his location. After commands were given and he allegedly ran, a K‑9 unit moved in and apprehended him nearby.
The agency says Holmes was booked on multiple felony counts, including grand theft of a firearm, three counts of armed burglary of a conveyance, and four counts of unlawful possession of a stolen credit or debit card, as posted by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Context: Stolen guns, car thefts and fraud
Detectives have long warned that vehicle burglaries are not just about a few missing items from a glove box. They are frequently linked to the theft of firearms and other property that can then fuel more serious crimes. The Tampa Bay Times has documented how stolen guns often move from cars into criminal networks, a pattern that helps explain why deputies sometimes roll out both aviation units and K‑9 teams in an effort to stop suspects quickly.
What comes next
Holmes remains in custody on the alleged counts. As with any arrest, the allegations have not yet been tested in court, and prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges.
Booking details and inmate status are listed in the online arrest inquiry maintained by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, which the agency says is updated frequently as cases move through the system.
