One person was killed early Friday when a car overturned on Route 20 (Hartford Turnpike) in Shrewsbury, authorities said. Officers responding to a 911 call around 1:23 a.m. found a Ford sedan flipped onto its roof, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A second vehicle, a Toyota sedan, struck the crashed Ford in the roadway after the initial collision, but that driver was not injured. Hartford Turnpike was closed for several hours while emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
What police have said
Shrewsbury police said the first officer on scene discovered the overturned Ford in the roadway and that investigators later determined the Toyota hit the vehicle only after it had already crashed. The Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council crash reconstruction team and the department's drone unit were called in to document the wreck and assist with the investigation. Police have not yet released the victim's name or the cause of the crash, saying the case remains under investigation, according to NBC Boston.
Local coverage noted officers were dispatched to the area of 800 Hartford Turnpike and named Officer Timothy Charland among those leading the reconstruction work. Northborough police assisted with traffic control while crews processed the scene and reopened the roadway, according to Patch. Authorities said they will release additional information when it becomes available.
Route 20's safety picture
Route 20 is a major east west corridor through Shrewsbury and has figured in regional safety analyses because of its heavy traffic and crash totals. A Central Massachusetts MPO safety report covering 2017 to 2019 shows Shrewsbury logged roughly 2,522 crashes in that period and recorded several fatal crashes, underscoring the challenges of keeping busy arterials safe. Reconstruction findings, including road and vehicle conditions, will inform whether changes are needed at the site.
The Shrewsbury Police Department "extends our condolences to the victim and their family after this tragic incident," officials said, and reiterated that the investigation remains active. The department said it will provide updates when it can, according to Patch.
