Tacoma’s East 91st Street turned into an overnight crime scene early Sunday after officers found two women shot on the 100 block, and detectives quickly labeled the case a homicide investigation.
Police say they were called to reports of gunfire around 12:35 a.m. on March 29. When officers arrived, they found two female victims on the block and called in detectives to take over the case.
According to a post from the Tacoma Police Department on X, officers responded at about 12:35 a.m. and located two females in the 100 block of East 91st Street, describing the case as a homicide investigation. The department did not immediately release details about the victims’ conditions, whether anyone had been arrested or what may have led up to the shooting. Detectives remained on scene into Sunday, canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and combing the area for evidence.
Scene and response
Neighbors reported a heavy law enforcement presence up and down East 91st Street as officers blocked off the area and went door to door for interviews. Tacoma Fire Department crews and crime scene specialists were also on site, and investigators were seen documenting the street and collecting physical evidence.
Authorities have not released the victims’ names, ages or official cause of death, citing the need to notify family members and the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Local context
The killing comes amid a string of deadly shootings in Tacoma earlier this year. A fatal New Year’s Day shooting in the Eastside neighborhood drew citywide attention and renewed calls for community cooperation with detectives, as detailed in reporting on a fatal New Year’s Day shooting in the Eastside neighborhood. Another person was shot and killed in early February, according to KIRO7.
