A Wednesday morning along Fall River's Quequechan River took a grim turn when a passerby spotted a man's body in the water and called 911, prompting a full-scale response from local and state authorities. Officers pulled the man from the river near the Quequechan Trail, and the case has now been handed to the state medical examiner while investigators work the scene.
The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is examining the body, and detectives from the Massachusetts State Police unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, along with Fall River police, are conducting the investigation.
How the discovery unfolded
According to Boston 25 News, the 911 call came in around 9 a.m. from someone walking in the area of the Quequechan Trail who reported seeing a body in the river. Responding officers recovered the man from the water, and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office told reporters he was fully clothed when he was found.
Investigators from the Massachusetts State Police detective unit assigned to the DA's office, along with members of the Fall River Police Department, are now leading the inquiry into what happened.
Medical-examiner process and timeline
The body has been transported to the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for testing and identification. As outlined by the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, once the agency accepts jurisdiction in a case, it can perform examinations and testing without permission from the family.
The office notes that identification and toxicology results can take anywhere from several days to a number of weeks, depending on the specifics of the case and the type of testing required.
Why the rail trail is under scrutiny
The portion of the Quequechan River rail trail where the man was found has been on law enforcement’s radar before. In August 2025, Fall River police launched "Operation Clear Path" to clear encampments and remove debris between Rodman Street and Brayton Avenue after receiving hundreds of calls for service, according to WLNE/ABC6.
What’s next
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office has said the man will be identified after the medical examiner’s office completes its examination. Officials have not released additional details as detectives continue their work at the scene and review the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
The case remains an active and developing investigation, and authorities say they will share more information as it becomes available.
