Flames ripped through a brick duplex on McCargo Street in New Kensington early Sunday, forcing a family onto the front-porch roof and sending five people to local hospitals as stunned neighbors poured into the smoky street to help. Some children jumped or were dropped to people waiting below, while multiple fire crews scrambled to contain the blaze.

Dispatchers said crews were called to the scene just before 8 a.m., and first responders arrived to find heavy fire in the duplex, according to WTAE. The station reported that five people were transported from the scene to area hospitals, though officials did not immediately release detailed updates on all of their conditions.

Officials told TribLIVE that a husband and wife and their three children escaped the burning home by climbing out a window and onto the front-porch roof. The father jumped to the ground first. The mother then dropped the children to their father on the ground, and she suffered a broken leg in the process, officials said. According to the New Kensington fire chief, the three children were taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital, the father was transported to West Penn Hospital, and the mother was later taken to another hospital.

Neighbor Candice Irish told WTAE she and several bystanders rushed over as the fire grew and the family tried to escape. "I just ran over to help, like, trying to catch the kids," Irish said, adding that they wrapped and moved the children across the street while waiting for firefighters to take control of the scene.

Fire Department Stretched Amid Staffing Pressures

The New Kensington volunteer fire department has been consolidating stations and shifting equipment as calls increase and the pool of volunteers shrinks, a juggling act that has some residents nervous about response times. Chief Ed Saliba has said the moves are designed to position crews where they can respond most effectively, according to WPXI.

Background: Recent Large Blazes

The city has dealt with other major fires in the past year. A three-story blaze in August 2025 was later deemed suspicious and triggered an investigation by the state fire marshal, as reported by CBS Pittsburgh. Those high-intensity calls have added to ongoing worries about aging housing stock and the risks volunteer departments face when fires move fast and hit hard.

Officials said the cause of Sunday’s duplex fire had not yet been released as investigators continued to work the scene. More information is expected once the fire marshal and local inquiries are complete, and as hospitals provide further updates on the injured.
