Deadly Crash Patterns on I-84 East of Baker City
Data from the Oregon Department of Transportation shows Baker County logged seven fatal crashes in 2023, underscoring how rural stretches of I-84 carry a disproportionate share of deadly collisions. In county-level summaries and past crash records, ODOT points to the mix of high speeds, long gaps between services and heavy commercial traffic as a risky combination on eastern Oregon highways.
Oregon State Police are still working to determine why the Suburban veered off the roadway, and troopers have not released additional information about the potential cause, according to the Baker City Herald. Authorities have also not said whether anyone else was involved in the crash or injured in the incident.
