Oklahoma City woke up under a blanket of clouds Friday, with temperatures near 46°F at Will Rogers World Airport (KOKC). Those clouds are expected to thin as the day wears on, giving way to a mostly sunny afternoon and a high close to 65°F. After that, the weather hits the gas pedal, with a much bigger warm-up this weekend and into early next week, as highs jump into the 80s and gusty south winds threaten to rearrange a few backyard plans.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Southerly winds will strengthen Saturday and turn downright gusty by Sunday, with sustained speeds of 14–23 mph and gusts up to about 35 mph. Monday looks even warmer, with highs near 87°F. The National Weather Service in Norman says advisory-level winds are possible and that gusty south-southwest flow will mix down to the surface during the warm afternoon hours, per NWS Norman.
Fire Weather Concerns
Dry air will knock relative humidity into the teens across parts of northwest Oklahoma, creating elevated to near-critical fire-weather conditions through Tuesday. Officials are urging residents to skip open burning and secure any loose yard debris while this dry, windy pattern hangs around.
Rain Returns Tuesday
A cold front will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon. Forecasters are calling for about a 30% chance of storms after midday, with higher odds overnight into Tuesday night. Any storms that form could produce brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Behind the front, the pattern turns cooler and breezier on Wednesday, with highs settling back into the low 60s.
What To Do
If your weekend plans involve being outside, go ahead and tie down or move in loose outdoor furniture and hold off on any landscape burning until humidity improves. Keep wireless alerts turned on and check updated forecasts before driving in strong gusts, especially west of I-35 where conditions will be driest and gustiest.
