What should have been a quiet early morning in Algiers turned violent Friday when a juvenile was shot and rushed to the hospital, according to authorities. The gunfire erupted around 1 a.m. in the 900 block of Hendee Street, where the youngster was struck at least once. Police described the investigation as active and ongoing, as per Fox 8.
The boy was taken from the scene by EMS to a local hospital after the shooting, Fox 8 reported. Detectives processed the area overnight but did not immediately release any suspect information or specifics about the victim’s condition. Authorities have called for the public’s help as they work to piece together what happened.
Pattern of violence in Algiers
The latest gunfire adds to a troubling run of incidents in Algiers that have left children wounded and neighbors on edge. In February, a 7-year-old boy was shot while riding his bike, according to WDSU, and residents said they were increasingly fearful for kids playing outside. Those earlier cases fueled renewed calls for more patrols and expanded community outreach in the area.
Police appeal for tips
Investigators are urging anyone who saw the shooting or captured it on video to contact police or submit an anonymous tip to Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans at (504) 822-1111. The NOPD Fourth District, which covers the Algiers area, is leading the probe.
The investigation remains active, and authorities say they will release additional details as they become available. This story will be updated when NOPD provides new information.
