The department notes that the city's Hit-and-Run Reward Program can provide up to $50,000 in fatal cases, according to the LAPD. Tipsters may also submit anonymous reports through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers.
Potential criminal penalties
Leaving the scene after an accident that causes death is a felony under California law. Vehicle Code section 20001 allows for state-prison sentences, fines, and, in some cases, enhanced or consecutive penalties.
